Abstract:
This paper uses the CHIPS2002 data to test the hypothesis that "social capital is the capital of the poor" by analyzing the two channels of social capital inequality that affect income inequality - capital deficiency and lack of returns. On the basis of perfecting the measurement of farmers' social capital and constructing a comprehensive index, this paper estimates the distribution characteristics of social capital return rate and analyzes the impact of regional income level changes on the role of social capital. The results show that the income and return rate of low-income farmers' social capital is lower than that of high-income farmers, which is also beneficial to farmers in rich areas in terms of regional differences. In general, social capital is a factor that widens the income gap of farmers. The conclusion of this paper tends to falsify the hypothesis that "social capital is the capital of the poor".
