Abstract

Solidarity is considered an important aspect of post disaster recovery. We investigate the effect of an exceptionally strong tropical typhoon (Yolanda, November 2013) using an unique experimental panel data set collected in 30 villages in the region of the Western Visayas in the Philippines before and after the disaster (2012 & 2016). In both years, 810 participants took part in our experiments, whereas 449 individuals participated in both samples. We also collected experimental data from children. We observe short term effects of the degree of exposure to solidarity after priming participants towards typhoon Yolanda but no long-term effects. We discuss heterogeneous responses as well as data from focus group discussion which also reveal short term increases in solidarity in highly affected areas.
