Abstract
Time value is an important factor that affects the supply of volunteer labor, but there are no consistent conclusion on its direction and the extent of impact. This research explores the impact of employment status and income of residents when providing voluntary work. This study uses CGPiS2016 household survey data, and adopts Becker's timedistribution theory. After using Heckman two-step model to deal with self-selection problem, the research showed that (1) employment can increase the probability of residents’ participation in volunteer work but employment also significantly reduce the time spent on volunteering; (2) income has no significant effect on the probability of participation of residents but has a negative impact on voluntary time spent. This study provides a robust empirical evidence for the study of the theory and policy of voluntary labor in the context of the increasingly inadequate supply of labor and the increasing demands for social governance in our country.
